UPDATE: Police confirm fatality in bridge crash

POLICE have confirmed a motorcyclist was died from injuries sustained in a collision at Harwood today.

Just after 2.15pm emergency services were called to Old Harwood Bridge, on the Pacific Highway at the Clarence River, following reports of a motorcycle crash.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the rider, a 54-year-old man, however he died at the scene.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Inquiries continue, and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The bridge remains closed to traffic in both directions as investigations continue.

Diversions are in place. Motorists can use the new Harwood Bridge as an alternative route. Northbound motorists from Yamba and Maclean can use Yamba Rd, River St, Cameron St and then the new Harwood Bridge. Southbound motorists from Harwood can travel northbound on the Pacific Highway, do a U-turn at Chatsworth Rd and then travel southbound on the new Harwood Bridge.

EARLIER: An Ambulance NSW spokesman confirmed a serious collision between a car and a motorcycle just before 2.15pm at Harwood this afternoon. 

"An initial report said there was a car and motorbike crash," the spokesman said.

"We have multiple crews on scene attending a male motorcyclist."

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was also called to the scene.
