VIDEO: Zombie Walk to unite community in mental health fight
THE zombies walk among us. Or at least they will on October 8.
Slap on your face paint, ready your "brains" and join the group of youth and service providers walking down Prince Street to help combat mental health issues in the community.
Seventeen-year-old Shania Knight said the community had suffered a lot over the last 14 months.
"There have been so many of my friends who have committed suicide and so many have attempted," she said.
"I think that this Zombie Walk would be an amazing thing to come to as it raises awareness for youth mental health.
"Not only that but it gets the community involved, together and united as we should be."
Community Development Officer (Youth) for Clarence Valley Council, Giane Smajstr, said the walk was an opportunity for the community to support the youth.
"It's got a youth mental health focus, it's part of October Youth Mental Health Month and it's an opportunity to breakdown stigma attached to health seeking... and to encourage young people to connect with services and community," she said.
"It's also about giving young people the opportunity to perform on stage, we're going to have quite a few youth performers here."
Mrs Smajstr said 18 months ago On Track Community Programs Youth Reference Group raised $1200 with the Grafton Tennis Club to go towards a youth mental health event.
"The young people in that group decided on a Zombie walk," she said.
Mrs Smajstr added that the youth-led event was important as it could help bring the community together.
Cranes Healthy Minds Co-ordinator, Jodie Clifford said something evil will be lurking in Memorial Park at 3pm on October 8.
"So we dare you to leave your bedrooms and leave your phones at home," she said.
"We dare you to come and participate."
The walk begins at Memorial Park and ends at Market Square where there will be entertainment, food, drink and information about mental health services.
The zombie walkers said they would like to thank Kate Matthews for her zombie makeup help.
