VIDEO: Ulmarra community shocked to lose their pool
THERE was shock among the people of Ulmarra when they learned this morning that their community swimming pool was set to close at the end of this summer.
At yesterday's Clarence Valley Council meeting a vote to close the pool was successful 5-4.
The council motion gives the community one last chance to convince the council it has enough support to continue. From the New Year the pool entry fee will be reduced to $1 and the number of patrons reported back to the council.
A group of playgroup mothers and grandmothers were teaching children to swim and the pool was waiting on the children from the local school who were booked in for later in the morning.
Tucabia resident Lainie Lee said she had brought her children to learn to swim at the pool and could not understand why the council would shut down such a valuable asset.
A vocal member of the community, Ian Thompson, said having the pool stopped young people swimming in the river.
"There's bull sharks in the river, I have photographs to prove it," he said. "You don't want to have kids in the water with them."
