Snowstorm on the way to Alps

A MONSTER storm is expected to cause chaos as it moves through south-eastern Australia.

It is expected to bring the biggest snow dump of the year.

A low pressure system will move over the Western Australia/South Australia border later this week, pushing a cold front over Tasmania and the south-east this weekend.

A high of six degrees is expected in Adelaide on Saturday and Sunday.

Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW will be hit on the weekend with damaging winds, rain, hail and blizzards.

Snow is expected in some suburbs of Hobart and massive dumps are forecast for the Australian Alps including the Victorian Alps and the NSW Snowy Mountains.

Up to 5cm of snow could fall in Ballarat, about 100km from Melbourne, and 10cm in the Otways near Geelong, south-west of Melbourne.

Massive snow dumps are forecast on the NSW Snowy Mountains, with 100cm expected between Sunday and Thursday of next week.

Between 80-100cm will fall on the Victorian Alps.

Cradle Valley in Tasmania will cop 50-70cm.

Queensland will remain dry.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said Victoria would experience its coldest snap of the year this week.

Currently snow is down to 800m but will come down to 300m tonight as the cold snap moves up from the south-west.

"A large area of cold air is moving from the south-west, moving rapidly off the Antarctic Peninsula,” he said.

"That's causing the lower temperatures and the significant lowering of the snow level, making it the coldest snap for Victoria this year.

"We did have some mild weather for the start of spring but that has quickly changed and it'll be a cold one.”

The maximum temperature for Melbourne this week is 12 degrees.

Mr Carlyon said they couldn't yet see the cold front that will hit Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW later this week but said it will be upon them on Thursday afternoon or night.
