Chard claims five as Coutts crumble on tricky deck at Ellem

CRCA CRICKET: GI Hotel Tucabia Copmanhurst captain Brad Chard led from the front with cherry in hand to squeeze every last bit of juice out of a seemingly dour Ellem Oval.

The 2016/17 GDSC Premier League leading wicket-taker was in fine form as he raised the ball for his first five-wicket-haul of the season as Tucabia rolled through Coutts Crossing for just 110 in the first innings.

Despite an early fightback from Brenden Cotten (26) and a determined double-figure knock from young gun Eli Fahey (11) in the middle order, Coutts always looked troubledas they succumbed to be all-out in the 31st over.

Chard (5 for 35 off 11) was unrelenting against the Coutts line-up with his mix of sheer pace and dogged ability to continuously hit a line and length, frustrating the batsman into false strokes.

Chard was well supported by fellow quicks Chris Adamson (1 for 15 off 7) and Tyson Blackadder (2 for 11 off 4.3) as the strike force shredded their way through the middle order.

Billy Blanch (2 for 24 off 5) also chimed in for the visitors removing Jesse Boffey (8) and Justin Inskip (17).

With almost 40 overs left in the afternoon after a brief stoppage for rain, Tucabia set about chasing down the Coutts total but it was slight panic stations when opener Dan Cootes (3) was out early on.

A consolidating second wicket partnership of 31 between Andrew Buchanan (20) and foil Derek Woods (14 not out) brought the run chase back on track for the Tucabia side.

A short cameo from former captain Bob McKenzie (10) and some late hitting from middle order batsman Matt Dougherty (25 not out) has the visitors poised at 3-72 needing 39 for first innings points as they resume the chase next week.
