Over-65 Men have sweet taste of victory at surf titles
WAVES of 1-1.5m greeted surfers at Yamba's Pippi Beach for day one of the 2015 Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard Titles presented by HIF yesterday.
The first champion crowned was Suffolk Park's Alan Atkins, who emerged victorious in the Over-65 Men.
Atkins claimed the heats with a series of respectable scores, including one heat total of 12.67 points. After nailing down an early lead in both finals, Atkins never looked back and held off all his fellow competitors to take the win.
"There are no more divisions for me to surf now. I simply started at the bottom and now I've gone to the top, so to speak," Atkins laughed.
"I'm just stoked that I'm still surfing alongside all these guys. We're lucky that our sport allows us to continue to do it right up until we get to divisions like this and we still really enjoy it.
"I had a hip operation back in September last year, so I wasn't sure how it would go. I'm stoked that it stood up to the test."
Fellow top-three place-getters, Phillip Clifford (Stuarts Point) and Phil Nichol (Manly) joined Atkins in cementing their position into the upcoming Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour in August.
Competition starts at 7.30am on each of the four days with the day's schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline 0458 247 212 at 6.45am.
The event has attracted more than 150 competitors from Tomakin in the south and north to Tweed Heads.
