McGarvie proves shining light silver event

TENNIS: Grafton Tennis Club has once again been well represented at the Ballina New Year Open with womens players Whitney Moon, Olivia Blanch and Tianna McGarvie all impressing.

Moon was unlucky to go down in her opening round clash against Victorian rising star Sienna Di Natale in a fighting 6-4, 6-2 finish.

Meanwhile, Blanch stormed through her first round clash against Nicola O'Mara (6-1, 6-3) but proved no match for third seed Olivia Hannah Mann who finished their second round match in uncompromising fashion 6-1, 6-1.

But the shining light for the Grafton club was junior star McGarvie who stepped up into the women's AMT Silver event after taking out the Under 16s division at the tournament last year.

McGarvie, who was the seventh seed for the tournament, dominated proceedings in her opening round clash against Brisbane junior Sophie Idzikowski (6-1, 6-4) before going on to claim a thrilling second round win over Casino's NSW representative Maddison Morrissey.

McGarvie and Morrissey went to the limit in both sets with the former narrowly edging her opponent in a first set tie-break before taking the second 7-5.

But it was brought undone for McGarvie in her quarter final clash against second seed Ashley Allman who won in straight sets (6-3, 7-6).
