Hospital shooting: Investigations continue after death

Update 3.22pm Saturday: POLICE conducted a search today for evidence outside of the Lismore Base Hospital following last night's fatal shooting.

Richmond Police District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Cameron Lindsay said SES joined police to comb the area today for any evidence to help with the investigation into the death of a 43-year-old man who was shot by Corrective Services officers on Friday night outside the hospital.

"Police were called to Lismore Base Hospital about 7.30pm last night, there they found a man who had been critically injured whilst allegedly attempting to escape the custody of Corrective Services officers," he said.

Earlier, NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard praised hospital staff for their "incredible" work last night in trying to save the life of a man shot by a Corrective Service Officer at Lismore Base Hospital.

Mr Hazzard said has spoken to the Northern NSW Local Health District acting chief executive Lynne Weir, and said how impressed he is about the actions taken by medical staff. "All reports are that the hospital staff, every man and woman were incredible," he said.

Update 12.45pm Saturday: Health Services Union (HSU) NSW Secretary Gerard Hayes said the tragic shooting at Lismore Base Hospital has shocked workers.

Mr Hayes said the shooting was the third such event at a NSW public hospital in three years and underscored the need for urgent, serious action to ensure NSW public hospitals are safe and secure. 

"This incident must be subject to a thorough investigation," he said.  

Update 11am Saturday: Corrective Services NSW said it is also investigating the shooting death of a man at Lismore Hospital last night.

A Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of an inmate attempting to escape during a medical escort to Lismore Base Hospital.

The male inmate assaulted one of two officers and attempted to run away as he was being led from the hospital following treatment at about 7.30pm, Friday 15 March. 

It's alleged the inmate was shot after a warning shot had been fired by one of the officers.

The inmate received immediate treatment by paramedics, and died about two hours later.

Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident.

All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest.

Update 10.41am Saturday: POLICE are appealing for witnesses and dashcam vision over the Lismore Base Hospital shooting.

Police are appealing for witnesses and vision as investigations continue into the death of a man after he was shot by Corrective Services' officers at Lismore overnight.

Officers from Richmond Police District were called to Lismore Base Hospital about 7.30pm yesterday (Friday 15 March 2019), after reports of a shooting outside the hospital.

They found a 43-year-old man critically injured after being shot by Corrective Services' officers while allegedly attempting to escape.

The man was immediately treated in hospital but died a short time later.

Richmond Police District is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, assisted by the NSWPF Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU), and the SCC Homicide Squad.

Investigators are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident - or has relevant dashcam vision - and who has not yet spoken with police, to contact Lismore Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Two Corrective Services officers are assisting police with inquiries.

Update 10.20am Saturday: THE Acting chief executive of the Northern NSW Local Health District said staff have been offered assistance following the shooting on Friday night.

Lynne Weir said Lismore Base Hospital staff have been offered counselling and support.

"Patients who were in the ED at the time of the incident on Friday evening are being contacted today to check on their welfare," she said.

"No staff or patients were harmed."

Following the shooting he was taken into the hospital for treatment, however he died a short time later.

A crime scene has been established and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.

Two Corrective Services officers are assisting police with inquiries.

Update 00.15am Saturday: A MAN has died following a shooting at Lismore Base Hospital.

A NSW Police spokesman confirmed a man who was in a shooting outside the hospital died after being admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

The shooting involved correctional service officers, the spokesman said.

Police will be making an official statement about the incident shortly.

Original story: A MAN is in critical condition after a shooting outside of Lismore Base Hospital earlier this evening.

A NSW Police spokesman confirmed there was a shooting outside of the hospital just after 7.30pm on Friday.

"Corrective service officers attended the scene outside of the hospital," the spokesperson said.

"One man is in a critical condition."

Police have created a crime scene outside of the hospital.
