Maintenance work begins on Gwydir Highway

CHANGED traffic conditions are in place on the Gwydir Hwy, 72kms west of Grafton, for essential maintenance work to be carried out.

The NSW Government has allocated $530, 000 to improve driver safety on the Gibraltar Range by reducing the risk of rock falls.

The work involves removing loose material along the slope, removing vegetation, rock bolting and installing mesh to prevent rock falls.

Weather permitting, the work is expected to take around five months to complete, and will be carried out from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

The highway will be reduced to one lane for up to one kilometre and traffic control will be in place.

A Roads and Maritime Service spokesperson said motorists may experience delays of up to five minutes and are advised to plan their journey and allow for extra travel time.

A reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place through the worksite for the safety of motorists.
