BENCHMARK 55: Trainer Scott Henley is putting his runner Joeuer to the test today.
"I'm not really sure if he's a 2600 or an 1800m runner, so hopefully we'll find out.”
The five-year-old gelding will run in Race 5, the Yoohoo McPhee Print & Design Benchmark 55 handicap over 2370m, and Henley said it wasn't a race that was initially on the radar.
"After his last start, we thought this might be a good time to test him out,” he said.
"He's pretty fit.”
The horse has won twice, over 1600 and 2600m and a run of recent placings has led Henley to look for a change in distance.
"He's probably been a length off winning the race, sticks his head in front and is headed just short,” he said.
"If we find that length he'll win a race or two, so hopefully this is the way to go.”
Carrying 58.5kg, Henley will use the 1.5kg claim from apprentice jockey Jackson Murphy, and said the draw of barrier three wasn't a particular advantage.
"It shouldn't matter much, he's an on pace horse. He'll just roll along and sit wherever Jackson is happy with him, and we'll see if he can run the distance,” he said.
"When he won in the 2600m at Gosford they didn't go that fast, they cantered until about the 400m and he had plenty left to win.
"Whether he can do that, we'll see, but he does look fit.”
