TAYLAH Beckman may only be 16, but she gets the nod as January's Senior Sportsperson of the Month.

Taylah won Open Ladies Singles and Doubles at the Ballina New Year Australian Money Tournament on January 12. She edged out Maclean's Ryan Johnson who scored 142 in a recent Lower Clarence First Grade cricket matches.

"It's pretty exciting to win this award," Taylah said.

"The girl I beat in the final at Ballina was a really good player who trains fulltime in Brisbane, so I was very happy.

"The hard work is starting to pay off."

To be eligible the nominee must have achieved at a high level in their chosen sport and reside in or be an active participant of a team or club based in the Clarence Valley.

The 10 monthly winners in each category will make up the nominees for the male and female, junior and senior Clarence Valley Sportsperson of the Year to be presented at the Clarence Valley Sports Awards scheduled for November.

The Ernie Muller Award for Contribution to Sport in the Lower Clarence will be presented while an upriver equivalent will also be created.
