RUGBY LEAGUE: The Grafton Ghosts remain undefeated in the Group 2 rugby league competition after defeating Coofs Harbour Comets 28-12 at Frank McGuren Park yesterday.

In a high intensity clash worthy of the top-of-the-table hype, the win saw the Ghosts reclaim the Clem Rankin shield.   The Ghosts started the match with all guns blazing, and with tries to centre Dylan Collett and winger Joel Moss the Ghosts jumped to an early 10-0 win.

It wasn't long before Coffs returned the favour with a damaging run from front rower Matt Cheeseman saw him barrel over the line.

The Ghosts were reduced to 12 men on the stroke of half-time after centre Khan Williams was sin binned. Coffs fullback Scott Street scored off the resulting penalty, and following the succesful kick they took the lead 12-10.

It was short lived however, after Ghosts captain-coach Danny Wicks recovered a short kick-off and found halfback Jake Frame who scored to reclaim the lead going into the break.

The Ghosts started the second half with renewed intensity, and were rewarded after hooker Todd Cameron burrowed over the line to score the opening points of the second half.

The Comets refused to go away, and lifted their intensity in defence, though the poor handling skills hampered their attack on the line.

Halfway through the second half was a pivotal moment, with the Ghosts leading 22-12 a gift two points from a penalty conversion were turned down, which proved to be a masterstroke after lock Carlton Elliot broke through three Coffs defenders to plant the ball down for the final try of the match.

Grafton Ghosts 28 (Collett, Moss, Frame, Cameron Elliot tries, Cameron 4 goals) def Coffs Harbour Comets 12 (Cheeseman, Street, Curry 2 goals).
