Cootes shows power and patience in match-defining knock

TUC-COP v COUTTS: Tucabia Copmanhurst GI Hotel opening batsman Dan Cootes batted with the right mix of power and patience to ensure his side came away with the points against a willing Grafton Hotel Coutts Crossing side in GDSC Premier League action.

Cootes punished anything short and wide to bring up a dogged half-century as he and opening partner Blake Ryan (32) came within a whisker of bringing up a century opening stand.

Ryan fell to an attempted hook shot from an Eli Fahey bouncer, but that did not stop the runs for Tucabia with the middle order chiming in with the willow.

Cootes was supported by a quick-fire 19 from Bobby McKenzie before Tim Bultitude (22*) ensured the side cruised to Coutts' total of 4-180 inside the 37th over despite the best efforts of Coutts Crossing pace bowlers Declan Ensby (2 for 27 off 8) and Eli Fahey (1 for 37 off 7.1).

Earlier in the game it had been the lethal pace and swing of Tucabia left-arm seamer Brad Chard (1 for 17 off 8) that caused problems for both Coutts Crossing batsmen and Tucabia wicket-keeper Derek Woods.

It was an ominous sign from the former Australian under-19 quick from the first ball when he breached the defences of Andrew McLachlan for a royal duck. But it was his lack of control that cost the seamer, bowling 12 wides in the 17 runs against his name.

Coutts Crossing captain Nick Wood was a shining light for his side with the bat hitting nine fours and two sixes on his way to 63 before Chris Adamson took his castle in his second spell.

Eli Fahey also chimed in with the bat to close out the Coutts' innings on 44 not out.

But it was a match that belonged to Tucabia's red-headed opener who was also tidy with the ball in hand to finish with figures of 0 for 28 off 7 overs as his side cruised to a five-wicket win.
