Burpees raise money for sick bubs

FOR most of us, the thought of just one burpee, otherwise known as voluntary self-torture, can be a little daunting but on Saturday, 28 masochists-for-a- cause took part in the inaugural Burpees for the Bubs fundraiser and completed more than 8500 of them in 30 minutes.

The event, which raised nearly $4000 for Grafton Base Hospital’s Children’s Ward, exceeded all expectations of organiser Shaun Davison.

Mr Davison, who operates Functional Habits Health and Fitness, said he was proud of everyone’s efforts on the day and their fundraising prowess.

“When you have people going out of their way to support something like this it makes you feel proud ,” he said.

The event was designed to put people in a challenging environment and a state of fatigue not usually experienced and it didn’t fail.

Some personal efforts were extraordinary, with the highest individual score going to Jennifer Harley with 475 burpees.

Former Graftonians Miru Ensbey and Samantha Colgrave, now living in Newcastle, held an event with eight participants.

One Grafton contender pushed so hard she vomited, but instead of stopping and taking time out she just kept going and completed the 30 minutes.

Some personal fundraising was phenomenal, with special mention going to Cyndi Tracey and Jodie Oxenbridge as well as Phil Kelly from Main Beach Training, Yamba.

To do a burpee, you must start from a standing position, drop to the floor in a push-up position, push yourself back up to a standing position and jump with an upright clap for good measure.
