Beckman claims Grafton win

THE Grafton Optus Junior Tour tennis tournament concluded at the Grafton courts on Sunday, after three days of outstanding tennis.

Although Grafton won only one singles title, all locals competed well against strong opposition.

Taylah Beckman was the sole winner, claiming the girls' under-14 title with an emphatic display.

Beckman, the No.1 seed, lost only three games in her matches, defeating Gunnedah's No.3 seed Gabby O'Gorman 6-0 6-1 in the final.

She then partnered local Georgia Allen to take the runners-up position in the girls' doubles, losing to Gabby and Kayla Wicks (Moree) 7-6 6-3 in the final.

Junction Hill's Nikita Avery won the consolation singles with a good win over Grafton's Rachel Fahey.

The boys' under-14 was a hard-hitting event, with the No.1 seed Corey Gaal (Sydney) triumphing 6-2 2-6 6-3 over Maitland's Andy Bullent in the final.

Bullent partnered Mathew Ellis to take the doubles title, with a 7-6 6-4 win over Gaal and Dylan Thompson (Coffs Harbour) in the final.

Lisa Mays from Sydney was a double winner in the girls' under-12 section.

She won the final of the singles with a 6-3 3-6 10-6 win over Hayley Jones, from Port Macquarie, and then partnered Junction Hill's Kaitlin Pardoe for a win in the doubles, 7-5 6-3 over Jones and local Tianna McGarvie.

McGarvie defeated Pardoe in the playoff for third place in the singles event.

Locals Jamieson Nathan (Yamba) and Jacob Hegedus enjoyed a successful tournament, partnering for a semi-final appearance in the doubles, and also contesting the consolation singles, in which Nathan defeated Hegedus 6-1 6-3.

The local clubs are now gearing up for their winter events, with all levels of players catered for.
